ASSAULT ON CATERER,
STERN COMMENTS BY BENCH
CONVICTION OF TWO MEN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANG ARE I, Monday. Arising out of what the magistrate described as a drunken melee at a dance at Maungakaramea on April 4, Thomas O'Shea, Edward G. Wright and C!. G. Rowntree were charged before Mr. J. If. Luxford. S.M., at tho Magistrate's Court to-day with assaulting Edward A. Bates. Wright was also charged with assaulting A. Cole and Jack Proctor and using insulting language. The fracas occurred about midnight at a danco following the Maungakaramea sports gathering. Bates and Cole wcro tho caterers and Uio incident complained of arose over tho sale of ice cream at tho dance.
After hearing lengthy evidence tho magistrate dismissed the charge against O'Shea and found Wright and Rowntree guilty. Ho said it was seldom men of mature ago indulged in tLis degrco of larrikanism. Ho did not think Bates was any less a guilty party —in fact, was convinced ho was as much to blame as tho accused.
Wright was fined £5 and costs 25s and Rowntree £3 and similar costs. In view of tho circumstances no order was mado that half tho line bo paid Bates.
