IMPROVEMENTS IN BOROUGH. ACCOUNT OF STEWARDSHIP. fP y TEL EG RA t'H. —OWN COR R ESrONUF.NT. 1 HAMILTON, Sunday. A public meeting at which addresses were given by the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr. J. I!. Low, and members of the Borough Council, was held in the Hamilton Town Hall last evening. Mr. Fow said tho purpose of the meeting was to explain to ratepayers what tho council had accomplished during its two jcais of othco.
There li.nl been a series of improvements to the streets and footpaths in the borough, said Mr. Low. Owing to improvements in the drainage system during the past few years the death rate in° Hamilton had become ono of the lowest in New Zealand. In its policy of unemployment relief the council had not encouraged labourers to lea\o farms. During the past two years the expenditure on tlio relief of unemployment amounted to £BBOO. Other important works included tlie necessary widening of tho approach to tho No. 1 bridge. Great efforts had been made by the council staff in keeping the water supply pure owing to the silting of the river, caused by tho diversion at Arapuni. Considerable data concerning tho proposed new traffic bridge across tho river had been acquired by tho council. The present structure was carrying much more traliic than it was built to support. Mr. F. K. Clapham said lie would like to see a larger field of candidates than 16 in tho Hamilton municipal elections. The necessity for a new tiatlic outlet from the main street was urgent. Referring to the future of the town another member of the council, Mr. S. V. Tyler, pleaded for greater interest in municipal affairs.
