WHARF SCHEME DEFERRED.
PORT OF NEW PLYMOUTH.
OUTGOING BOARD'S DECISION
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday
In view of tho fact that tho immediate construction in concrete of tho new Moturoa Wharf at New Plymouth, estimated to cost about £400,000, would mean tho levy of a rate, and that the opinion of the majority of members of tho Harbour Board was that it was possible to maintain and develop tho trado of the port by deepening tho water, and without at once providing new berthage, tho board decided at its meeting yesterday against tho proposal to call tenders at once for tho work.
Upon tlio recommendation of (he pilot, Captain 0. F. Mclntyre, it was also decided to drop the proposal to secure a tug until the new wharf was under construction. With tho present arrangement of the wharves the pilot considered that a tug was not necessary as a safety factor.
