POPPY DAY APPEAL.
SUM OF £1269 IN HAND.
further returns to come.
GREAT SUCCESS OF CAMPAIGN.
Well over' 30,000 Auckland people responded to tho Poppy Day appeal issued by the Returned Soldiers' Associa-' tion yesterday, and tho amount in hand last evening from the sale of poppies was £1269. The total receipts are expected to compare very favourably with those of last year, when the amount in hand on tho day of the appeal was £1392. 'I ho amounts from seven suburban stalls will swell tho receipts, whereas last year there were only five outstanding stalls. Assisted by about 200 helpers, the Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell, and tho executive of the Returned Soldiers' Association worked hard from early morning until dusk. Fortunately it was a fine day, and hundreds of peoplo were attracted to the city. Tho onslaught of tho sellers of the poppies was relentless, and by the afternoon there were very few lapels that did not bear tho red emblem.
There were 46,000 poppies for distribution in Auckland, and when the final count is made it is expected that there will bo very few remaining. These poppies are made by members of the British Legion—a band of disabled returned men in England. Sixty-five per cent, of the proceeds of yesterday's sales will be devoted to returned men in distress; 20 per cent, N?ili go to the Veterans' Home at Mount Roskill; while 15 per cent, will be devoted to the costs of administration of the Returned Soldiers' Association. Tho members of tho executive of the Returned Soldiers' Association are well pleased with the result of the collection. A tribute was paid by them to the generosity of the public and to the many helpers "who worked like Britons." Tho largest return from one box was £23, collected at one of the main Queen Street stands.
RESULT AT DUNEDIN. SUM OF £I3OO EAISED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Friday. The Poppy Day appeal at Dunedin resulted in the raising of £I3OO in the city alone. This sum is exclusive of returns from tho country districts. Last year the amount raised in the whole of Ota'go was £750.
