WAITEMATA ROADING.
PROGRESS OF OPERATIONS.
REPORT TO COUNTY COUNCIL,
The progress of a number "f important Toading v.-orks/ in the Waiteinata 'bounty was detailed by the engineer, Mr. Andrew Murray, at the meeting ot the County Council yesterday. Mr. Murray reported that during the msmth the bitumen penetration work on the Birkenhead main highway had been continued, hut on account of the wet weather it was questionable whether any further bitumen laying could be done on this road during the present season. In the same riding the Onewa Road, another main highway, had been completed, while 87 chains of Kosedale Road had been completely metalled. The Right Hon. J. G. Coates was now endeavouring to obtain further assistance by way of a free Government giant to enable the metalling to be completed to the riding boundary. On the Kumeu-Albany main highway earthwork operations had been ■while the metalling operations were following as (juickly as possible. There now remained only 35 chains to be completed ■with bas6 metal to give the first access fever this route.
In tho Wainui Hiding the Wainui Bridge had been completed, although the approaches had yet to bo finished. The contractor for widening lj miles of the Waiwera-Upper Waiwera, main highway had completed his work anil arrangements had been made with him to widen n further 40 chains by day labour. Arrangements had also been made to expedite the completion of the Waiwera Bridge approach, and double shifts were now being worked. Metalling operations on Lincoln Road were being continued by the Public Works Department, while on the Titirangi highway three members of the' engineering staff had completed the survey work. Considerable difficulty had been experienced in obtaining suitable curves for the concrete, road along this route, and during the month preliminary proposals had been submitted to the Highways Board engineer for his criticism. Advii/e had since, been received that tho tentative proposals were in order and arrangements were being made for the completion' of the plaii3. In tho Takapuna Riding 21 chains of concrete road on the Northcole main highway had been opened for traffic during the month, the contractor having dono excellent work. The concreting of the liga Road bridge had been finished and within a week 'he road would again be open for general traffic. During this month the staff had been busy preparing and forwarding to the Public Works Departrneat and Main Highways Board claims for grant works Completed and in hand, and, as the resuit of these claims, approximately .£15,000 had been collected during the month of -March, at the end of the financial year.
