MOUNT ALBERT DOMAIN.

ACQUIRING QUARRY SITE.

USE AS SPORTS GROUND. REQUEST TO THE GOVERNMENT. The vesting of tho old Government quarry on Mount Albert in tho Borough Council, as tho Domain Board, together with the approach from the New North Road by tho route of the old railway, was sought by a deputation of members of Iho Mount Albert Borough Council, which waited on tho Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. P. A. do la Perrellc, yesterday. "When tho quarry, which is owned by tho Railway Department, was closed, we were informed by Mr. Coatos, then Prime Minister, that there would be no difficulty in handing over tho quarry area to the Domain Board, which controls tho area surrounding tho quarry," said tho Mayor, Mr L. E. Rhodes. On that promise the council had gone ahead with loan proposals to cover a scheme of development works. It was hoped to build a motor road round tho domain, giving access to the quarry site, which would make a fine sports ground It was also asked that the railway approach from the New North Road should bo vested in the board for conversion into a drive. Tho Local Government Loans Board had approved the scheme of development, which was ready for submission to a poll of ratepayers. But before that step could bo taken, it was necessary that the land held by the Government should be handed over. Mount Albert was sorely in need of playing areas, and tho quarry site, which was really the crater of the mountain, would provide fine facilities for football and cricket

The matter was largely one for the Minister of Railways, to whom ho would gladly make representations on behalf of the deputation, replied tho Minister. He heartily commended the work being done by the borough in beautifying its district.

Mr. Rhodes: We are moving with the object of placing the loan proposals before the ratepayers on May 8, the date of the Transport Board's loan poll, so we urge that an early reply one way or the other should be given so that we can finalise the matter.

"1 will placo the position before tho Minister of Railways when I arrive in Wellington to-morrow morning," promised Mr. do la Perrelle.
