SIZE OF STEAMERS.
THE MODERN TENDENCY. [BY TF.r.EG RAT'K. —OWN COP. RESPONDENT. ] WANG ANUI, Friday. An interesting table, giving the dimensions of old and , modern cargo and passenger ships, was placed before the Wanganui Harbour Board by Mr. T. H. Lovegrove, a member of the board. He said that in view of the contemplated improvement scheme in the harbour the question haa arisen as to whether the policy of shipping companies was to build longer ships with increased draft or whether the tendency was to reduce both. "1 find after going into matters in Wellington," Mr. Lovegrove said, "thai the newer boats favour our scheme." He quoted from the table compiled the length, beam and depth of boats built in 191.0, and compared them with those of more recent times. This showed that in 1914 there was a tendency to build longer and bigger craft with greater draft, but latterly the aim was to decrease the length and draft and increase the beam dimensions.
