RAILWAY DEVIATION.
CESSATION OF WORK. OLD PROPOSAL REVIVED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday. It is staled from Foxton that the decision to cease work on the Palmerston North railway deviation has been received with a certain amount of pleasure by those who all along advocated the adoption of the Levin-Great ford deviation. With the commencement of work at Palmerston North hope was abandoned by supporters of the Levin-Greatford scheme, but fresh possibilities have now opened up, and a revival of interest in this deviation is likely to come in the not far distant future.
The work of tearing up the eight miles of track laid and collecting the materials for storage was commenced on the Palmerslon deviation to-day. Several officers have received notice of transfer to the Oisborne and Nelson districts. About 90 per cent, of the men have signified their willingness to transfer to other undertakings.
