MR. W. M. HUGHES.
A MIXED RECEPTION. APPLAUSE AND HOOTS. When Mr. W. M. Hughes, ex-Prime Minister of Australia and now M.P. for North Sydney, made a sudden and unexpected appearance on the platform at the National Party's Convention at Sydney recently, there was an extraordinary outburst from the delegates.
The majority, including most of the ladies-, applauded with great energy and enthusiasm. A minority gave vent to its feelings by "boo-hooing." Mr. Hughes was imperturbable. He gave no sign that the demonstration had been noticed by him and, without the slightest hestitation, took a corner scat at the chairman's table—a coign of vantage from which he surveyed the gathering with languid amusement. It. was apparent, says the Sydney Morning Herald, that Mr. Hughes was thoroughly confident of his power to justify himself in the eyes of Nationalists—if called upon to do so.
