WAITEMATA COUNTY.
WORK OF PAST YEAR. MANY GRANTS OBTAINED. A year of all-round progress and expansion is shown in the annual report presented to the Waitemata County Council at its meeting yesterday by the county treasurer, Mr. C. A. Cawkwell, and the engineer, Mr. Andrew Murray.
" The rate collection for the financial year just closed was a record one, more particularly in view of the stringency of the money market," states the report. " The collection under all • headings totalled £47,110 7s 9d, as Is 8d for the preceding year."
There had been a considerable increase over last year's record collection of grant moneys, mainly owing to increases in subsidies, and construction grants from the Main Highways Board. The total of grant expenditure was £39.817, against £22,518 for the preceding year. A total of 16J- miles of new roads had been formed, while miles of new metalling had been completed. On clay formation roads 621 miles had been graded, while 16 bridges and 11 concrete culverts bad been built.
During the year 231 building permits were issued, the total value being £82.204, compared with 253 permits, of a total value of £70,329 10s, in the preceding yeai. The permit fees this year amounted to £199 7s. as against £l9O during the preceding period.
