TRANSLATION OF GENESIS I.
Sir, —A contributor to your correspondence columns who signs himself 'A.E.C., lifts given tho following as a literal translation of Genesis 1., verse 1., "In the beginning the Gods created heaven and earth." It is very far from being a literal translation. "A.E.C." has misplaced the definite article, and by rendering the name of God in the plural without noting that the verb "created is in the singular he does violence to the text Considering that the verse occurs in the Priestly narrative his implied suggestion of polytheistic belief refutes itself. If "A.E.C." could defend his translation of this verse from Genesis then ho would be compelled to render T. Kings XVIII., verse 39. as. "Jehovah, he is tho Gods." D. D. ScorT.
