ON THE LAWNS.

FROCKING AT ELLERSLIE. So imcertain were the weather conditions on Saturday morning that the majority of women attending the races at Ellerslio while hoping for the best prepared for the worst and sallied forth ready for all emergencies. As it happened tho rain held off arid the day turned out to bo really pleasant, the somewhat chilly wind that prevailed failing to find its way into the stands. Prudence having made itself felt earlier in the day the flocking on tho whole showed little that forecasted the coming fashions. Undercoats and wraps were quito frequently to be seen summer froths in flowered georgette or crcpo do chine, while hero and there a smartly cut winter suit or a tweed coat in light colours strapped with leather might bo seen. ll,its supplied the principal noto of colour, and now and again a leather coat in a vivid shade of green or red might bo seen. On the whole it might safely bo said that tho autumn clothes which many women had planned to wear on Saturday were left at homo for a more propitious occasion.

However, thero is never any lack of colour at Ellerslio oven should it fail in the frocking, for always the flower beds are full «-f it. On Saturday they wero blazing v; ith bonfire salvia, zinnias in gorgeous tones of yellow and bronze and dahlias in every imaginable colour, while round the sunken ponds that broke the smooth greenness of tho lawns were low borders of crimson flowers shading into delicate pink. Not the least of its charms are tho beautiful trees which give such vista effects to tho grounds and which at this time of tho year aro of so vivid a greenness.
