SUBMARINE RECORD.
DEPTH UNDER WATER. VESSEL OF ITALIAN NAVY. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. ROMP:. March 29. A message from ISpezia says tlie Italian submarine, Mameli, successfully passed a pressure test, healing the world s depth record by reaching 137 metres (about 580 feet), which is 12 metres more than tbo previous recorc attained last year by a submarine of the Dahlia type. The Mameli, which is 212 feet long, was built at Taianto shipyards.
The submarines of the Balilla class are designed foi deep diving, and are of exceptionally strong construction. lhey were iirsi laid clow in 1925. 'J he surlace displacement i> 1360 tons, and submerged, 176/. tons. Their over-all length is 202 feet, speed on surface, 18/, knots.
