RACING CARNIVALS.

|• HHE AUCKLAND MEETING yvvw' / BRIGHT GLOW'S EASTER. . '7 (WIN FOR GAY BALLERINA. ETWO SURPJiI'SE VICTORIES. "' ' / CLOCKWORK ANT) BENNIE. I The Auckland Racine: Club's Autumn <3\!eetinpc opened on Saturday. With conjfinuous jain throughout the previous night, and an overcast sky being in fevidence at. dawn with the wind in an Unfavourable quarter, it, looked very much as though the Ellerslie gathering would be seriously marred. However, as the morning advanced the wind veered round to the south-west,/the sun came out, and the meeting passed off under pleasant con'ditions. There was an attendanco of 39.000, which could be regarded n s highly satisfactory considering the threatening State of the weather. The Hon. P. A. tie la rerrcllc, Minister of Internal Affairs, ,was present. 'J'ho arrangen ents made by * th<> secretary, .Mr. \\\ S. Spence, as usual resulted most satisfactorily. The course was in capital ord'er, but owing to recent rains fast times were not to bo expected. _P'he racing throughout was in every way [worthy of Ellerslie: The totalisator investments during the Bay amounted to $71,750 10s. • Compared T. jth the sum handled on tho corresponding day last year, this represents a decrease of £15,015. Tin leading event of the programme T.as the. Easter Handicap, and when tho numbers were hoisted denoting the starters for the mile race, it was found that the field had been reduced to fourteen by the defection of Branson, Awarere, and Merry ]\[inf. It was a good conditioned lot that filed out of tho paddock, and none looked better than the top-weight, Keremoanu. In Abe preliminary gallop iVallar strode along- with marked dash, and Blight Clow also pleased greatly. When' backers got to work jt was soon made apparent that jVallar was the cl;ief selection with thoso speculating. The favourite got off well, and ;rfi he dashed into the lead there seemed to be, good cause for bis large circle of followers to adopt the jubilant air. Yallar showed the way 'into the straight, but .when iho real test canio to tho son of iValkyrian at the/distance he was beaten hi once, and the result of an interesting finish was a lplf-length victory for Bright Glow, from an outsider in the shape of tho Waikato marc, Mervctte. Bright Glow was always racing well up and she deserved the victory that came to lier. ' j - The Great Northern Champagne Stakes v.as popularly summed up in favour of Supremacy. He found his stride quickly, but after his effort in endeavouring to wrest the lead from Folyxena he faded away, and it was left to Gay Ballerina to lead the field home, and the bay filly finished up her task nicely. The Sydney sportsman, Mr. 11. G. Kirkpatrick, bought Gay Batyeirina, from her breeder, Mr. W. G. Stead, after the filly won the North Island Challenge Stakes at Trcrithani last month, for 2000 guineas, and as the filly won the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes in the first' start under the colours of her new owner, and the winner s poition of the Great Northern Champagne stakes amounts to £IOOO, she has pro\ed a good speculation. , The time stated on the official card for the start of the Champagne Stakes was 2.37 p.m., but the contestants wero lined up and despatched at 2.35 p.m. . The Brighton Iltndlc Pace resulted in a surprise victory oti the part of Clockwork, who made the same take the complete shape, for he I*l the field from start to finish. The Onstyw Stakes, which was confined to the two-year-old division was , responsible for another surprise, a brown colt rejoicing in tho name of Bonnie setting by a neck in an exciting finish. Six defections left eleven runnerfl in the President's Handicap and Toxeuma. Queen Arcli and Hyde Park were best backed in a good betting race. Toxeuma showed out first from a good start and was tha leader past the stand from Sleepy Sol, Eager Rose, Desert Glow. Hyde Park. Glenstar and Wenday. There was little change in the order along the back, but Eager Rose moved up after passing the six furlong post and made play through the cutting from Toxeuma and Sleepy Sol (together), Hyde Park. Sir Archie. Desert Glow and Queen Arch. Eager Rose turned into the straight over- a length clear of Toxeuma and Hyde Park, who were about three lengths ahead of Sleepy Sol. with Queen Arch and Corinax next. Toxeuma and Hyde Park headed the leader at the distance. Hyde Park coming on to beat Toxeuma by two and a-half lengths. Eager Rose was three lengths back third and Corinax about a similar distance away fourth. Next to finish were Queen Arch. The Lover, Wenda.v and Sleepy Sol with Glenstar a long way back last. Hyde Park won handsomely and Toxeuma went a fine race only to meet one that was too good at the weights. Corinax was near the rear in tl.o middle stages and his forward position at the finish suggests an early return to form. There was a field of seven for the Great Northern Oaks and l'rodice was an odds on favourite, over £2OOO better backed than Lucy Rose, who had a alight call over

Llanoro. Kawainga and Mon Star were in charge when they settled \ down and led past the stand two lengths clear of Gold Money and Lucy Rose (together), with Prodice and Llanoro nest. Except that Prodice moved i\f> slightly thoro was little change in the ordor along tl.e back until they nearcd the five furlong pout. Here Prodice ran. to the lead followed by Gold Money, Kawainga. Llanore and To Money. Running to the turn Prodice and Gold Money, who wore in close company, drew away and turned into the straight four lengths clear of Llanore and To Money. Over tho last furlong Prodice came away and won easily by four lengths from Gold Money, who defeated To Money by eight lengths. Kawainga was a moderate fourth followed by Llanore, Lucy Rose and Mon Star. Prodice showed undoubted superiority. Gold Money mado a solid showing and Te Money battled on at the finish to secure third place. Lucy Roso faded out quickly at the end of a mile and Llanoro failed to stay after looking a place possibility at the turn. Tho Brighton Hurdles was a decent betting race with Kilburn only a little more fancied than Kawini and Wiltshire a good third choice. Clockwork led over the first fence, where Beau Cavalier and Ramblin' Kid fell. Once over Clockwork went out to force tho pace and at tho stands he was out six lengths from Kilburn and Odin, with Wiltshire. Kamehameha. King's Guard and Mangani following in order and Kawini last. Running out of the straight Clockwork increased his lead slightly and along tho back was eight lengths clear of Kilburn and Odin, with little change in the other order and Kawini moving up. Four furlongs from homo Clockwork was four lengths clear of Kilburn with Kawini another four lengths back and Odin heading the others who were beaten. So they raced to tho straight wliero Kilburn mado an effort at the last fence only to be checked when coming on the inside. Clockwork tl.en went on to beat Kilburn by two lengths, Kawini being five lengths back third. Wiltshire was another four lengths away fourth succeeded by Odin. Karamu and King's Guard The winner was an outsider and his backers received a substantial dividend. Kilburn was not well ridden and should have gone after tho winner sooner The check at tho last fenco hampered him but mado no difference to tho result Kb wini ran one of his usual solid races and Wiltshire shaped fairly. Bright Glow's Victory. Solid wagering on tho Easter Handicap saw Vallar made about a A'.'JGO better favourite than Bright Glow, who was in a good deal more demand than Reremoana. Reremoana and Vallar showed out first from an excellent start. Vallar leading along the back from Kiugfield. High Pilch. Flying Juliet. Reremoana, Bright Glow and King Lu. Tho field was strung out at tho halfmile. wliero Vallar was -just leading Kingfield. who was followed by Flying Juliet, I'eiemoana. Kins Lu. Bright Glow. Mervotto and High Pitch. Vallar and Kiugfield were almost together entering the straight about two lengths in front of Reremoana; whoso closest' attendants were ' Flying Juliet, Bright Glow. King Lu and Mervetto. Once in line for tho post Vallar began to weaken and Kiugfield had chargo at tho distance whero tho field spread across tl.o course. Bright Glow forced ahead in tho last furlong and won by half a length from Mervette. Kingfteld was a neck away third and King Lu right up fourth. Next to finish were Flying Juliet. Royal Doulton. White Fang, Mosque. Reremoana and High Pitch with Goldeu Krist tailed off last. Bright Glow was well ridden by R. Reed and displayed determination at the finish. Mervetto was badly placed early and was doing bettor than anything right on tho post. Kiugfield was always in the piclnro and only failed in the last hundred yards. King Lu recorded a solid effort and should soou win. while Royal Doulton and Whito Fang came from a good way back. Six contested tho Great Northern Champagno Stakes and Supremacy was backed down to oodds-on, being over .i'UOO better supported than the second choice. Gay Ballerina. Polyxena found her feet quickest followed by Eaglet, Gay Ballerina and Supremacy. Polyxena led through the cutting closely attended by Supremacy, with Gay Ballerina, Eaglet and Gemlight next. Rounding tho bend Polyxena was still in chargo with Supremacy at l.er girths and Gay Ballerina, Eaglet and Gemlight next. Polyxena and Supremacy, who were out fairly wide from tho rails, were disputing tho issue at the distance when Gay Ballerina shot through on tho inside and won brilliantly by two lengths from Polyxena. Eaglet was a neck away third and Supremacy fourth, Monalof and Gemlight being well beaten. Gay Ballerina won like a good one. Polyxena did surprisingly well but Eaglet was unlucky not to bo second. Supremacy was going liko a winner until tho last furlong and then stopped unaccountably. His form was incorrect and possibly he was a little off colour. The Favourite Wins. Another field of six lined up for the Marigcre Stecplechaso and Star of tho East was mado a firm favourite over Master Arch and Vexatious. Star of the East and Uralla were quickly prominent and were leaders up tho hill from Polyphemus and Master Arch. Star Of Tho East, Master Arch, Uralla and Vexatious were racing in close company at the double with Potoanui several lengths back next. Running along tho back Star of the East began to draw away and established a commanding lead in the next few furlongs to cross the stonewall into the straight well clear of Vexatious, who also had a good break on Uralla. Nothing had a chanco with Star of the East at tho finish and he ran home an easy winner by fifteen lengths from Vexatious, who defeated Uralla by half a, length. Potoanui was a moderate fourth with Master Arch and Polyphemus badly beaten. Star of tho East gave a dashing display of fencing and outclassed tho opposition. Uralla hit tho second fence on tho hill very hard each time, otherwise she would have been second. Vexatious also jumped a little faultily. An outsider in Bennie effected a big surprise in the Onslow Slakes, for which Molero was a good favourite over Currajong and Pelletle. Lady Suzanne was Bmartest to begin, followed by Awamutu, Currajong and Pelletle. Lady Suzanne and Awamutu were the leaders through tho cutting, closely followed by Pelletle, Praetor, Currajong, Bennie and . Flying Prince, with Taurua heading the others. Lady Suzanne lost her position after going three furlongs, and Awamutu was first round tho bend from Praetor, Bennie, Taurua and Pellette, with the field bunching. A splendid tussle ensued over the final, furlong and Bennie finished solidly to win by a neck from Praetor. Flying Prince was a similar distance away third and Currajong close up fourth. Then in close order were Taurua, Pellette, Motere and Trig. Bennie was better seasoned than most of the runners and solidity won for him at the finish. Praetor displayed fine speed early and just failed. Flying Princo finished on better than ho has been doing lately and Taurua made an excellent showing after being slow to begin. Motere did not find his feet smartly enough tc> have a chance. Next to tho Easter Bandicap tho Eden Handicap was tho best betting race of tho day, Black Maire. Indolent and Good Boy being the ber.t supported. Good Boy was first to movo but Justify ran through quickly to lead along the back from Envoy, Good Boy. Black Maire and Indolent. Running up to tho five-furlong post Indolent moved up sharply and was in front with Justify nt U>o cutting, where Envoy, Brampton, Black Maire. Bahama, Whakama and Monsogpe were also prominent. Indolent and Justify were still the leaders at tho turn with Envoy. Standfast (who had run through fast from a rearward position). Black Mairo and Some Lady all handy. Once in lino for tho post Indolent Bhook off Justify and was immediately tackled by Envoy. Over tl.e last hundred yards Envoy forged ahead to beat Indolent by three parts of a length. Somo Lady, who got a run on the rails, was a neck away third and Standfast fourth. Next to finish were Brampton, TLtirnus, Monsogne. Gay Cockade, Justify, Good Eoy and Black Maire. Envoy ran oasily his best race to date but might not havo beaten Indolent if that horse had been more patiently ridden. Somo Lady. Steadfast and Brampton all shaped well, Standfast being badly placed early Rnd making up his ground very rapidly Hearing the turn and staying on fairly well at (he end. Black Maire was handy to the turn but was steadied by his weight at the finish.
