CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF.

THE AUCKLAND TOURNAMENT PLAY IN QUALIFYING ROUND. S. MORPETH HEADS THE LIST. Tlio qualifying round of the Auckland provincial golf championship was played at the Titirangi links on Saturday under adverse conditions. It was thought heavy rain on Friday night had made the course heavy, but by tho time the first competitors started the rain had ceased, and a heavy and boisterous wind blew from the south-west. Seldom have tho qualifying rounds of the championship been so remarkably high. All competitors found tho conditions extremely difficult. The course itself was in first-clas3 order, but the high scoring must be accounted for by the heavy gale. Any half-hit shots on the homeward run were caught by the Whau hazard and many cards were ruined at the much-discussed new holes.. "Temptation," "the Wrecker" and "the Redan." Only two players were able to break 80 during the day, J. N. Hockin bringing in a good card of 79 in the morning and Sloan Morpeth doing the same total ill the afternoon. Hockin returned the following card in the morning:— Out: 4 5 6 4 5 4 4 5 4—41. In: 6 3 5 4 3 5 4 4 4—38. '..'0ta1.—79. Details of Morpeth's card arc as follows : Out :1 5 4 4 4 5 3 4 5—38. In: 83643545 —4l. Total. —79.

The best gross total of the day was returned by Morpeth, with 162. lie was followed closely by W. S. Ralph, of the Auckland Golf Club, who played steadily throughout the day and returned 82 in the morning and the same score in tho afternoon.

The following players qualified for the championship:—

P. J. Western, 89, 88—177, and R. 0. Gardner, 86, 91—177, tied for 16th place and in an interesting play-off over 18 holes the former won by 84 to 85. The medal handicap over 36 holes was won by S. Hunter, who returned 90 in the morning and 86 in the afternoon, giving him a net score of 152, with a handicap of 12 in each round. V. L. Baker was second with 185, 32—153. Owing to illness R. M.
