HONORARIUM OF MAYOR.

PROPOSAL FOR REDUCTION.

The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Dopaldson, presiding. Mr. H. J. Cooper gave notice of intention to move that the incoming Mayor's honorarium should bb fixed at £IOO a year, to be paid in 12 equal amounts at the end of each month. The present honorarium is £2OO.

Mr. F. M. Winstone, of "Winstone, Limited, wrote drawing the attention of 1 the council to the congestion of traffic at tho corner of Khyber Pass and Victoria Crescent, particularly when tramcars . were coming out of Khyber Pass. It-was decided to inform Mr. Winstone that fee matter was receiving the council's attention. 1 v

The Auckland Electric-Power Board asked that arrangements should be made for taking a poll on the proposed loan of £650,000 on February 20. The matter was left in the hands of the clerk. '

Mr. G. E. Smerdon reported -he had received a number of complaints from ratepayers regarding the condition of "the tram tracks in Khyber Pass. The foreman was instructed to furnish a report, so that a definite request for improvement could be forwarded to the Transport Board.

Tho Legal and Finance Committee reported that of -the total rates struck, amounting to £19,486, tho sum of £17.611 had been collected on January 31, leaving £1874 outstanding. At the end of February, 1928, the rates outstanding totalled £1963.
