VETERAN TRAINER'S DEATH

Mr. .Stewart Waddell, the veteran irainer, died at liis home at Greenmeadows, Napier, <m Saturday afternoon. 3fe was in his S2iuJ year. Mr. Waddell, for many years private trainer to the late ]fon. J. D. Ormond, and later public trainer, had many good horses through his hands, and scored some notable successes. 11b was born in Scotland and came to New Zealand in 1863, making his lirst home in Otago.
At first Mr. Waddell was not connected with horses, but later joined Mr. Glassfoui s stables, and rode with a good deal f>f success both in New Zealand and in Australia. He was with the late Dan O'Brien iri Australia, and later rode Nautilus and Atlantic for the late Mr. John (.haafe. As a trainer lie prepared Tem--I>cbt for the Dunedin Cup and other good Jiorsps in Francotte and Hippomenes. While in the employ of the late lion. •Tj- D. Ormond, he turned out Renown, Zimmerman, Sir Lancelot, Ideal, Sir Tristram. Tn later days he did best with Mi\ W. T. Hazlett's horses, of whom Gold Light and Razzle Dazzle have been the best.
The late Mr. Waddell was widely known and popular. He had been in indifferent liealtli for some time, and his team of late has been under the charge of his nephew, F. Waddell.
