MOTOR-CYCLE AND CAR.

DEATH OF PILLION-RIDER-

DRIVER GRAVELY INJURED. A collision last evening between a motor-cycle and a motor-car, in "which tLe motor-cycle was almost telescoped between the rear bumper and rear left wheel of the car, resulted in the death of a youth who was piilon riding oa the cycle and serious head injuries to the driver.

Adrien Poynter, aged 16£, of 24, Enfield Street, received severe head injuries resulting in his death in hospital about two hours later.

Oliver Godfrey, aged 19, driver of the motorcycle, sustained injuries to the head and bodv.

The motor-cycle was proceeding up Khviber Pass followed by another machine on vrhich were two other youths, one a brother of the deceased.

A five-scaler motor-car, driven by 3lr. A. D. Wylie, was turning into Burleigh Street to obtain a supply of petrol from a service station, when the rear of the car was struck by the cycle with sufficient force to cause the car severe damage and very seriously damage the cycle. Poynter was thrown off the pillion on to the middle of Khyber Pass, between the tram rails, while his companion was entangled with the machine under the car. Considerable exertion was required to free Codfrey and his machine. The other machine managed to avoid striking the motor-car.

Mr. Wylie was proceeding in ihe direction of Epsom, taking several friends home after spending an evening at his place, and he found it necessary to replenish his petrol supplies. He was almost in Burleigh Street, after having turned carefully, whan his car was struck by the cycle. No one in the car was hurt, but the impact was severa enough to shake the car and batter it considerably. Poynter was employed as an engineers' apprentice. Godfrey is a draper's assisiLOERY PASSENGER, INJURED. STRUCK BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. A compound fracture of the light leg was sustained in unusual circumstances by Mrs. Florence Campbell, of 1. Mcmona Eoad, One Tree Hill, yesterday afternoon. With a number of other people returning from a picnic, Mrs. Campbell was sitting on the edge of a motor-lorry with legs over the side. When proceeding along the Great' South Road the lorry swerved to pass a car, arid narrowly missed coming in contact ■with another vehicle. Mrs. Campbell was struck on the leg by the vehicle. She was admitted to the Auckland Hospital shortly before seven o'clock, and her condition last evening was regarded as satisfactory. TAXICABS STRIKE POLES. PASSENGER AND DRIVER HURT. Two persons were injured when a taxicab, driven by Mr. T. Tipton, and containing one passenger, Miss Lena McLean. collided with a telegraph pole at the foot of Mount Eden, near the railway bridge, on Saturday afternoon. The taxi struck the pole with considerable force, and was very badJv damaged. The engine was torn from its bed, the windscreen was smashed and the bodywork damaged. Miss McLean sustained injuries to the head, %vhich are not considered serious, and the driver received minor injuries. Both were admitted to hospital Miss McLean lives at 7, Park Road, and Mr. Tipton at 42, Crummer Eoad, Grey Lynn. As the result of skidding in loose metal, a taxicab collided with a telegraph pole at the foot of Ayr Street, Parnell, on Saturday afternoon. The bumper of the car was buckled, the headlights were smashed, and the front p3rt of the chassis was badly twisted. The driver escaped without injury. BUS AND CAR COLLIDE. PASSENGERS ESCAPE INJURY. A collision between a motor-bus and a two-seater car, fortunately without injury to any passengers, occurred in Great South Eoad, close to the Penrose railway bridge, late on Saturday evening. The car, driven by Mr, D. Barrett, of Valley Eoad, Mount Edsn, was travelling from the direction of Otabuhu. and the bus, owned by the Passenger Transport Company and driven by Mr. G. Twidle, was going in the other direction. There were about 15 passengers in the bus, all escaping injury. Neither Mr. Barrett nor a passenger with him was hurt. Xo serious damsge was done to the bus, but the motor-car was badly damaged.
