BRILLIANT GIRL SWIMMER.

NEW RECORD IN SYDNEY.

At tho Australian women's swimming carnival yesterday Miss Jean Cocks, a mere girl, won tho 440 yds. championship in sm. 55 3-55., which is an Australian record. The previous best time was Miss Fanny Durack's, 6m. 3 2-ss. Miss Cocks has proved herself to bo tho greatest girl swimmer Australia has produced. Sho also won the 100 metres championship in lm. 13 3-ss. Miss Cocks, who is about 14, came into prominence in November, 1927, when she swam 150 yds. in lm. 55 3-55., and 100 yds. in lm. 10 2-ss. Sho was then at Bondi School. Shortly after she beat Miss M. W'ehselau's record of 2m. 49 2-ss. for 220 yds., which sho swam in 2in. 48 3-ss. CHALLENGE CYCLE RACE. FITZGERALD BEATS BORDER. At the Leichardt Stadium on Friday evening Ted Monson, the middle-weight champion, fought five rounds with Merv. Williams when the bout was stopped by the referee, who declared it to be no fight.
