BIG ADVANCE IN BRITAIN.

SECOND IN WORLD PRODUCTION.

(Received January 23, 6,25 p.m.) British Wireless. RUGBY, Jan. 22. The remarkable progress made in respect to the colour arid texture of artificial silk is made apparent at an exhibition of British artificial silk goods, which is being held at Olynipia. Sir Robert Home, in opening the exhibition, referred to the rapid strides made by the British branch of the new industry. In 1900 the whole production in the world was 1000 metric tons. In 1910 that figure had risen to 8000, tn 1920 it. was 25,000, and to-day it was 154 000.

Ten years ago Britain was fourth on the list of countries producing artificial silk, but to-day she was second only to the United States. In 1925 Britain was producing only 24,000,0001b. of artificial silk. Tn 1928 she produced 52,000,00011). To-day she was not only supplying her own needs but was sending enough artificial silk products abroad to produce an extia revenue of £7,000.000. The material produced had been improved immensely in quality, colour and design.

Mr. F. F. Mcßrvde, manager for New Zealand of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, advises that the total new business completed for 1928 was £21,340.458, comprising £17,075.837 for the ordinary department, and £4,264.621 for tho industrial department, exceeding the previous year's figures by nearly £2,000,000, and creating an absolute record. The New Zealand branch has again achieved a wonderful record for tho year, having provided over £4,750,000 of the whole total.

Dalgety and Company, Limited, report having received the following cablegram from their London house, dated January 22: No wool sales have been held to-day owing to the thick fog. The active demand continues, but prices for crossbreds, all descriptions, now show very little change as compared with the closing rates of last, series. If anything the tendency is in favour of sellers still.
