VALUELESS CHEQUES USED.
NINE CHARGES ADMITTED. ' ONE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Wednesday. A sentence of one month s imprison ment was passed on William John Gillies, aged 36, hv Mr. Wyvern Wilson, fc.M., in the Hamilton Magistrates Court to-day in connection with nine charges of obtaining goods and money by means of valueless cheques. Accuse , !who pleaded guilty, was also admitte <o probation for two years and was ordered to make restitution and abstain from drinking alcoholic liquor. Detective-Sergeant Thompson, _ who prosecuted, said accused had been in Postal Department's service in Wellington for 20 years. In April lie left the service and bought a boot-repairing u cess. He had a wife and two children. After a quarrel with his wife accused !*vent aviay in a car which he had purchased, and toured the Taranaki an Auckland provinces. At nine dineren places he issued valueless cheques tor amounts ranging from £1 10s to £5, anc obtained benzine, board, goods an change. The total value of the cheques issued was £27 15s. , Mr. C. A. Speight, for accused, pleaded /for leniency. He said accused had had a bank account and expected money to be available in the account by the time the cheques were cleared. Connsel added that accused's wife had sold up his home after bis departure, and when he found this out he committed the crimes. He and his wi.e had 'since been reconciled. Counsel asked for the suppression of accused s name.
The magistrate refused the application, faying the publication of accused persons' names was a wholesome deterrent *gainst -crime.
