THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. SALES AT HIGH LEVELS. A remarkably firm tone obtained on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. Several descriptions opened their new year sales at advanced figures. Others touched new high levels, and offers in a great many cases were at higher rates. There was average inquiry for local body debentures, with one sale of City of Auckland, 1940, 5£ per cent., at £93. an advance of £2 since the last sale Gill-edged securities met a keen demand. In banks Commercials ol Australia had turther sale at 30s 9d, and closed fiimei than on Thuisday New Zealands twice had sale at the current rate of 625. More were sought at the price, sellers 62s 3d. Unions of Australia. Melbourne register, changed hands again at £ls 17s, Offers for Nationals of New Zealand, Nationals of Australasia, English, Scottish and Australians, and Australasias, were all at rates higher than at the close of the Exchange on Thursday. In insurance Ney Zealands rose threepence and sold twice at 47s 3d. The same remarkably firm tone as in banking was evident, closing offers tor New Zealands, Australian Provincials, and Queenslamls being above the level of the previous day. In loan and agency the same strong upward trend, was marked. In coal the preference issue of Renowns changed hands at 2s Bd, the level of the last 1928 sale. Offers for many descriptions were at advanced rates. In gas Auckiands continued their upward movement to rise a penny further and sell at 24s 4d, while the contributing issue advanced fivepence on the last sale to change hands at 18s. In shipping Huddart-Parkers made their first sale since November at 495, a rise of a shilling, and closed with holdcis asking 49s 6d, sixpence more than the previous day. Offers generally in the section were higher. A new high sales lovel wus touched in the breweries section by New Zealands, which changed harms at 58s 6d. More were offered at the price, buyers 58s 6a. Staples and the preference issue of lnnes were inquired for at advanced rates. In the miscellaneous section British Tobaccos opened their 1929 sales in Auckland with transactions at 45s 7d and 45s 9d, compared with 45s at the last 1928 sale. More were available at 45s 9d, buyers 45s 6d. Farmers' Trading Company shares sold again at 8s 3d, and Hay ward's Victures had another sale at 20s 9d. Holden s Motors changed hands at 30s, ninepence above their last sale in December *1 he contributing issue of New Zealand Refrigerating eased a penny to sell at 9s ou. The mining section remained comparatively quiet Ohinemuris sold again at 8s 3d, and closed with offers at Bs. twopence firmer than the previous day. Wailus had two sales at 14s sd, a penny easier than the last transaction.
