THE THAMES MEETING.

FIRST DAY'S PROGRAMME.

The Thames Jockey Club will inaugurate its annual race meeting at Parawai to-day and a capital day's sport may be expected to eventuate. The following is a list of the horses engaged in the various events:

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS BY ARCHER,

Arrangements have been made to run the Topu Handicap in two divisions. Few of those engaged have any form to recommend them and there are a number of unknown quantities. As a result of his forward running in better company at Eilerslie Good Boy is likely to carry most money if produced. However, he has two other engagements and there is a doubt whether he will run. In his absence Camp Prince, Flying Tresses, Footpad and Justify may claim most attention.

A moderate field will contest the Borough High-weight Handicap. Archeno has a substantial impost, but should go well in the class. War Officer and Whaka King are distinct possibilities and the best, of the others may bo Mangani, Kamblin' Kid and Glen Star. It should be a fair betting race and tho popular fancies may include War Officer. Whaka King and Archeno. Some smart hacks figure in the Puriri Handicap and there are quite a few who have shown form recently. If reserved for this event. Good Boy would bo likely to start favourite, as tho distance is to his liking and lie has a. handy weight. Others with chances include Patere, Subdivision, Takutama, Indolent and Roman Pearl. Good Boy, Subdivision and Patere may find most support. There are eight engaged in the Goldfields Cup and it should be an interesting race. Flying Juliet was fourth in a good field in tho Grandstand Handicap at Ellerslie and 011 that running her prospects appear very bright. Two.of the most difficult ones she may have to beat aro Le Choucas and Ohineryuri, who nvo capable gallopers when at their best. Tho consistent Wenday looks the pick of the others, who aro not a good lot. Flying Juliet, Le Choucas and Ohinemuri aro likely to bo best supported. Eight horses figure on tho card for the Parawai Hack Handicap. Here again Good Boy is nicely placed and has another excellent chance. Leitrim is a good hack, and, if lie has freshened up since his last start, will be hard to beat. Whaka King. Frothblower and Lucy Rose are all possibilities and the wagering should be spirited. Backers may show a preference for Good Boy. Leitrim and Lucy Rose. There is a small field in the Flying Handicap. On recent form High Finance looks the pick and figures are also in her favour. Billikins, Town Bird, Liaison and Takutama arc all speedy and should make solid showings. High Finance, Billikins and Town Bird may be tho prime fancies.

The Waitakaruru Hack Handicap has drawn a field of seven and tho consistent Maori Boy, who has filled a place in each of his last six starts, heads the list. Maori Boy should again go well in this field, although improvers like Valroe, Hakanoa and Glen Star nro likely to be difficult to defeat. Backers may fancy Valroe, Maori Boy and Hakanoa.

Eleven horses are curded to contest the Hauraki Plains Handicap, but there may bo a few sc.ratchingß. Flying Juliet, and Ohinemuri will probably run in the Goldtields Cup and in that caso are scarcely likely to come out again. Cynthia N. and Scat displayed form at Te Awamutu last month, and Modest Boy, who won at Ellerslie, is on the improve. In the absence of the topweightß backers may single out Modest Boy, Cynthia N. and Scat for most attention. WORK ON THE TRACK. [BIT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES. Friday. The majority of horses in training for to-morrow's racing were indulged in light tasks only thin morning. Scat, Auriculus nnd Serang did six furlongs on the course proper, three trestles out, in 1.20, with Serang shaping best. High lose and Liaison covered four furlongs on the plough and finished on terms in 51}s. King Smock did a useful round. Princess Snow, who was slightly injured yesterday, -was given half-pace exercise. Quinsilia, King Leslie, Claremore, Envoy and Arch Queen were given slow work. The latter moved smartly over a finishing gallop. SECOND DAY'S EVENTS. Tlie second day of the Thames Jockey Club's meeting will bo held on Monday next, when the following events will form the programmeKopu Handicap (six furlongs). County High-weight Handicap (li miles), Turua Handicap (six furlongs), Thames Plate Handicap (one mile). Hikutaia Hack Handicap (seven furlongs), President's Handicap (six furlongs), Ngatea Hack Handicap (one mile), and Farewell Handicap (seven furlongs)*
