NORTH SHORE CLUB. OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY. WEST END WINS BARRETT CUP. The official opening of tho North Shoro Rowing Club took placo on Saturday afternoon when, in response to the executive s invitation, there was a big attendance) of supporters and friends at the "at homo' in the boathouse. King Edward Parade, Dovonport. Tho boathouse was prettily decorated, while streamers of flags were hung across the beach.

The president. Mr. N. C. Cameron, welcomed the visitors and then called upon the patron, Mr. A. Harris, M.P. for \\ aitemata, to open the season. Mr. Harris gave an interesting account of tho club s activities during tho last fow seasons,, and paid a compliment to the ladies' cominitteo for its untiring efforts in the club's interests. This committeo has raised nearly £'3oo for tho purchase of new boats for the club, and theso are expected from Melbourno at an early date. Mr. I). W. McLean, a very old supjjorter and officer of tho club, also spoko. Afternoon tea was provided by tho ladies' committee, under tho direction of Mesdames Seagar, Butland, Farquharson and Sharp. Mr. E. Buckler represented tho Auckland Rowing Association, and tho various other clubs sent representatives, while Mr. C. Maloney, secretary of tho Whangarei Regatta, was also present. A big rowing programmo was provided and additional interest was lent by tho [our clubs, Auckland, Waitemata, West End and St. George's, rowing a trial fours race. Tho other clubs were present to contest tho Barrett Cup tho first niter-club race of the season. The water conditions were tcood until about lour o clock, when a southerly wind raised a rough sea, but after an hour of Buch conditions tho wind dropped. The course wua from Sheerlegs Wharf to a point off the boathouse. The first heat crews in tho race for trio president's trophies wero:—W Dean, E. Korn, T. Cotes, V. Clark; 11. Jackson, I>. Townsend, F. Norriij, L. Challiuor. Jackson quickly took tho lead and held tho advantage until passing Devonport Wharf. Dean's crew then drew level and a hard raco to the lino ensued. Dean forcing ahead in tho lust stages to win by half a length. The second heat crews wero:— D. Davies, W. Seagar. S. Challinor, E. Olliver; B. Rutledge. B. McCallum, R. Follas, B. Vowles. Davies' crew jumped out at tho start and steadily drawing away won by two lengths. Tho frews of D. Davies and W. Dean met. ill the final, and a hard rare ended ill a win for Davies by three parts of a length. WEST END CLUB. RACING FOR KOHN SHIELD. The West End Rowing Club held races for the Kohn Shield, tho three crews being:—V. McFarlane, B. Such, T. Conway. F. Conway: J. Haylock. W. Bloxliam, R. Woodside, M. Taylor; L. Strange. V. Ilogan, R. Macey, L. McDonald. A keen raco ended in a victory for .McFarland's crew. AUCKLAND CLUB. PEWTER MUG CONTEST. The Auckland Rowing Club crews competed for tho historic pewter mug. Four crews took part, those in tho first heat being:—A. Ross. J. McC'omish, G. deal, A. Doull; W. Faddy, E. Thorburn, L. Rose. A. Jackson. Ross' crew jumped away at tho start and won easily. The second heat crews were:—R. Stacey, R. Mahon, A. Coutls, A. Finn; J. Bypate, A. Andrews, S. Scott, R. Leabourn. Stacey's crew led until about a hundred yards off the line, where Bygate spurted and in a great finish won by 3ft. The final between Ross and Bypnte produced a great race, Bygato winning by about 2ft. WAITEMATA CLUB. SUBSCRIPTION TRIAL FOURS. Five crews competed in tho Waitemata Boating Club's subscription trial fours. Tho first, heat crews were:—G Reod, E. Biahop, T. Welson, W. .Tones; L. Brooker, C. Belton, P. Piatt H. Sherson: W. Lowe. T. Keegan, F. Siinmonds, E. Gladding. Thero was littlo between tho crews to the quarter distance, whero Read took command and went on to win by two lengths. The secgnd heat, crews were:—G. Barke-, T. lmpey, D. Shore. H. Lawrence; R. Cruickshank, J. Beesley, J. llunn, (1. McGchan. This was a fine race throuirhiut. Barker took the lead just over half-way. In tho filial stages Cruickshank made a great spurt, but Barker 1 ung on to win by 2ft. The final between Read and Barker was robbed of interest owing to an accident iu Read'i boat and Barker won easily. ST. GEORGE'S CLUB. ROWSELL MEMORIAL CUP. The St. George's Rowing Club held trial fours for tho R.owsell Memorial Cup. Four crews competed. The first-heat crews were: V. Hargreaves, J. Coote, W. Handle, V. Dunne; W. Woolhouse, S. Hislop, A. McGlasham, V. Morton. This was an even race to half-way. where Hargreaves smartened tip his stroke in the rough water and drew out to win by two lengths. The second-heat crews were: M. Simons. T. Colbeck, D. McGregor, E. Auger; O. D'Authreau. F. Solomon, W. C'nrr, 'l'. Olsen. This was a tine raco throughout, ■Simons winning by ono length. Tho final drew the crews of Hargreaves and Simons. It proved a hard go over tho wholo journey, and Simojis got the verdict by half a canvas. BARRETT CUP CONTEST. VICTORY FOR WEST END CREW. After a long delay the following crews set off to decide possession of the Barrett. Chip for tho next 12 months:—North Shore; D. Davies. AV. Seagar, S. Challinor. E. Oliver. Auckland: J. Ungate, A. Andrews, S. Scott, It. Leabourn. Waitemata: G. Barker. T. Irnpey, D. Shore, 11. Lawrence. West End: V. McFarlane, B. Such, 'J'. Conway, F. Conway, tit.. George's: M, Simons, T. Colbeck, D. .McGregor, E. Auger. Tho crews drifted down with tho tide for some distance and wero then sent on their journey. At. the western end of tho wharf Waitemata held a slight lead, but at the eastern aide West End was in front, followed by Auckland, Waitemata, North Shoie and St. George's. Just below Vent nor Auckland and North Shoro spurted and North Shore ran into third place. Auckland still challenged and was steadily overhauling West End. Six crews competed and the standard of rowing showed an improvement on that in the first series. In the final C. St. Clair, Brockett, Cook and Partridge won by a length from Molesworth, Hill, Pickup and Blackburn.
