AN ISLAND SETTLEMENT.
NEED FOR BROKEN-DOWN MEN
Tho wish that some island in the Hauraki Gulf could be secured as a reformative settlement for broken-down old men was reiterated by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in tho Police Court on Saturday. He had to deal with John Gregg Cummings, aged 76, charged with being idle and disorderly and with begging in Darby Street. , Chief-Detective Hammond said accused had been begging in the streets for some time. Ho badly needed a "clean-up," and it was suggested be should be romanded for a week. The Magistrate: I wish we could send these men somewhere. Chief-Detective Hammond: His typo will not stay in an institution. The Magistrate: I know (hat well enough. He will be remanded until next Saturday. Another caso of begging also came up for decision when Christopher John Huntly. aged 33, appeared for sentence on charges of being idle and disorderly and of begging in Queen Street. Ho promised to leave for the country and to take out a prohibition order if tho magistrate would givo him a chance. The. Magistrate: That is all very well, but if 1 send you to the country 1 got letters from the people there with all sorts of complaints. You will be convicted and ordered tto come up for sentence within six months, tho condition being that you leave for the North tonight. An incident in a bus on the Civic Square gave rise to charges against Joseph South, aged 42, of drunkenness and use of obscene language. Ho admitted tho offences.
"Ho cannot get away from drink," said Sub-Inspector McCarthy. "Ho becomes quarrelsome aiid uses bad language, not realising ho is doing it." "I had better put him away for a bit, ' was the magistrate's comment, in imposing sentence of three months' imprisonment.
