MARRIAGES FOR MONEY. FOREBODINGS OF SCIENTIST. Australian and N*.Z. Preps Association. LONDON. Nov. 22 In nti address to members of the Royal Society Dr. F. C. S. Schiller, of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, said tho llouso of Lords was becoming rapidly Americanised, becauso impecunious peers were being forced to marry heiresses, generally from the United States, to restore their fortunes.
Dr. Schiller said this was an expedient that was sometimes biologically ruinous, as tho heiresses wero often the last effort of a degenerate expiring stock. He suggested as a remedy that when the first holder of a peerage died his children and grandchildren should meet to choose from among them the ono whom they regarded as tho worthiest successor.
