FATAL LEAP INTO RIVER.
INCIDENT AT HELENSVILLE.
MENTAL HOSPITAL PATIENT.
A dramatic leap into tlio Kaipara Itivcr at Helensvillo on Thursday afternoon, after ho had been accosted by a constable, resulted in a Maori, Waha Wai Pangarei, who had escaped from the Auckland Mental Hospital, being drowned. Pangarei had beon an inmato of tho mental hospital for a number of years, and was missed on Monday. Uo was not considered a dangerous case, but all police stations wero notified to keep a look-out for him. Ho was seen walking into Helensville on Thursday morning, and later in the day, Constable W. E. Hunt saw him sitting on the wharf. When Constable Hunt asked the Maori to go to tho police station with him, ho jumped up, and running to tho edge of tho wharf, dived into the liver. TIIO constable immediately procured a punt but before ho could reach tho Maori ho disappeared. Tho body was recovered yesterday afternoon.
