NOTES ON THE RACING.

FIRST SIGHT WINS WELL. GAY SONNET IN FORM. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TIMARU, Friday. Tunnmoe, the winner of the Otaio Hurdle Handicap, the opening event at the South Canterbury meeting to-day, has not done much racing, but already ho has shown useful form as n juniper. He won two hurdle races at Gore last month, while a week ago he inn second in n steeplechase at Winton. His present record suggests that lie will do a lot more winning later in the season. Kangntahi. who inn second, came from the North Island for the Grand National meeting last year and was purchased by h South Canterbury sportsman. He has had a rest and look? us if he would show improved form. Belcaire, the winner of the Spring Stakes, is an Australian-bred two-year-old filly purchased as a. yearling in Sydney for llOgns. by his present trainer, F. D. Jones, and passed on later to Mr. H. A. Knight Though not a brilliant beginner eh© has a nice turn of speed nnd alio smothered the opposition at the finish. First Sight was responsible for a very attractive performance when he won th» Teschemnker Handicap. His rider was in no hurry and he was last at the home turn, but he was going in great stylo at thv entrance to the straight. He had the rac» in safe keeping a little further on. First Sight has won five times in his last si* starts and as he appears to bo impro'inif all the time ho may win some moro good money at the holiday meetings. Battlo Colours, who filled second place, had every chance. He looked a winner at the en trance to the straight, but First Sight beat him decisively at the finish. His winning turn may not be long delayed. Pricklei struck all the had luck that was going and did remarkably well to finish third. Great Star registered a smart perform ancc when lie finished fir.pt in the Tycho Hack Handicap. He was in front all tho way and never gave his opponents a chsuca. Unfoitunately his rider lost the fruit of his victory as ho could not draw the weight. Great Star is a smart galloper who can bo improved. Arrowy lost his chance in the Tycho Hack Handicap at tho start, where his rider pulled him back to last. He gradually made up his leeway, and he was running on in good style over tho last furlong. Later in tho day he ran another solid race in the Kerry* town Hack Handicap, in which only Bank Draft headed liini off.

Cumpnmilo Buffered some bad luck in tho early stages of the Tycho Hack Handicap. She is a useful hack, who may win very soon. m Amor, tho winner of the President s Handicap, is a much-improved gelding. He has prospects now of developing into a useful

horse in open company. Malrneny ran a good race when she finished second. Shu now carries the colours of her trainer, J. B. Pearson, who htiß aequired n lease of her.

Sweet' Refrain, the winner of the Maiden Plate, is trained by the veteran S. Trilford, who has not been much ill evidence lately, but the form in which hp turned this filly out showed that he has lost none cf his cleverness. Sweet Refrain lias a fine burst of speed and she will do si lot mole winning.

Bank Draft, the winner of the Kerrytowu Hu.. Handicap, has plenty of pace, and now that he has struck form he should bo woilh keeping in mind for other races. Gny Sonnet made an exhibition of her opponents in the Flying Handicap. She wih have to carry big weights in modernto company in future, but she is a brilliant galloper who only requires to avoid the best company to earn a lot 'nioro money this season. Money Order was well placed in the early stages, being in close attendance on Gay Sonnet to the straight, where ho collapsed. It was a disappointing effort. EVENTS ON SECOND DAY. NOTES FROM WELLINGTON.

FORM AT LEVIN AND OTAKI. SOME PROMISING HORSES. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN COEBESrONDEXT.] ! WELLINGTON, Friday. The well-known Woodvillo trainer, H. E. Connop, lias been offered the position of •tarter to one or two clubs, and he intends band ill liis trainer's licence and take up as much starting as opportunity offer#, lis has occupied for some years a unique position for a licensed trainer, in that he has been h steward of the Woodville Jockey Club. His position and experience should make him nn ideal man as a istarter. The Fordell trainer, F. Tilley, always has porno measure of success at o':aki, for h° is an adept, at, plucins his tesm lie scored a first and a second with Avro and a second and a third with Hctellus. Thrift did hpr sharo at Levin, and thus all three horses earned money on the trip. At Otaki Tilley SBid that ]>hu shine Prince had done well after his racing at Riccarton and he had had a few days in the paddock to freshen up, Laughing; Prince will bo the star of the team for Auckland at Christmas, the other members of l;he northern team being Cashier, Consent and the Hunting Sons—Melodise two-year-old Glenartney. The last-mentioned is one of the nervous type and is being taken away from home more for experience than with any idea of winning a race.

It is understood that the Wellington owner, Mr. W. Higgins, contemplates a trip to Australia shortly with a small team. Kilbronsyth, if he remains nound, in a certain traveller, but the scheme so far has not been arranged definitely. Mr. Higgins may also send over one or two brood mares, for already Australian studmasters are making inquiries for Martian mares, and he has a good one in Password, the dame of Passbook.

The two Maiden Platers who scored at Otaki may prove gallopers, with Richfield the second-day winner, the batter of the pair. Richfield, who is a useful-looking four-year-old by Acre trom Pergola, racod so well in ;i hack handicap on the first - day that, ho was eagerly bucked o:i the second day. lie was a trifle sore and 1 h?a prevented him from jumping out smartly but over the last bit he wps eauily superior. Possibly he was a triflo lucky to, beat Baskicr, for that gelding was almost over soon after the start.

Arikinui, who finished second to Richfield, is a three-year-iold by Chief Ruler ; ! rom a smart, galloper in Celmisia. Ho should not be long working his rway out of maiden class. Nor should Wyeford, a solid t'our-year-old by Warplano from Spring Tide. Ihe Trentham-t rained Chief Singer scored very decisively on the opening day, onj her failure to gain any prominenco on the second day must bo attributed to bad luck at the start, for she was always in the ruck.

With just ordinary luck Shot Silk should soon win. Chopin can gallop iairly well. Veronese has won her raceii this season in a style which suggests she will not bo troubled unduly by her promotion to opan company. Last season her foini could not bo described as anything bin poor. This season in nine starts she has won four races and been second twice. THE FEILDING MEETING. FIRST DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. [r.y telegraph.—rniEFß association.] FEILDING. Friday.
