THE CATTLE EXHIBITS.

SHOWS STRONGEST SECTION

DAIRY BREEDS PREDOMINATE

QUALITY REVEALS PROGRESS

(,'altle undoubtedly form the predominant live stock class at the show. This is not to be wondered at, because the Auckland Province is the greatest cattle raising district in New Zealand, possessing no less than 1,181.184 head, or more than one-third of the total number in the Dominion. The chief feature, of course, is the dairying type, of which Auckland carries just under half the total held in Now Zealand.

The quality of the dairy cattle displayed shows how rapidly the northern province is advancing in this respect. Die two outstanding breeds, jerseys and I'riesians, are exceptionally well represented, while Avrshires and milking Shorthorns were fairly strong.

The drawback so far as cattle are concorned is that in numbers tho show did not do justice to tho resources of the province, or rather cattle breeders in the outlying districts showed a certain lack of enterprise. They apparently have failed to realise that besides tho commercial fact that. Auckland now offers by far the best market in the country for pedigree stool; as is proved by the presence of such highpriced animals, tho metropolitan show forms an excellent advertisement and many valuable educative lessons. In the matter of beef cattle there was an inadequate display. Since the two great raising districts, North Auckland anil the Hay of Plenty, are now connected with tho capital by railway there is no excuse for cattle men failing to exhibit, particularly as their exhibits could afterwards be sent to West field for sale at a time when prime beef is in demand. Following is the prize list,:—
