LIQUOR WITHOUT LICENCE.
SALES MADE TO NATIVES. WOMAN FINED TWENTY POUNDS. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] TAIHAPE, Friday. Mrs. Nellie Kirkpatrick, boarding housekeeper, Taihape, appeared before Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer nine charges involving tho sale of liquor without a licence, sales to natives within a prohibited native area, and sales to natives on tho day of the election. Accused pleaded guilty to all charges. Sergeant O'Neill, who appeared for tho police, said accused had been suspected of sly grog selling for soma time and on November 15 the police had raided her boarding house and found a quantity of liquor in various parts of the house. She had supplied liquor to natives at two shillings a bottle. Mr. R. C. Ongley, who appeared for defendant, pleaded for leniency, stating she was not in the habit of sly grog selling and tho charges against her arose out of an isolated sale.
Junes totalling £2O were imposed and defendant was also ordered to pay over £lO costs. The magistrate informed accused she had been treated very leniently and if sho came before the Court again on similar charges a heavy penalty would be inflicted.
