Jhe secretary of the Manchester Dockers' Union had the greatest difficulty in preventing 1200 members of tho organisation from ceasing work and marching to the Town. Hall, as a protest against a statement made by the Mayor of Salford at a dinner, that the dockers "took up with lasses, lived in a single room, and produced, a population which was a menace to the town, aind left them chargeable on tho rates." The secretary said it was a malicious attack on the morals of the dockers and their wives. He felt like handing him over to the women. The Mayor privately received a deputation of protesting dockers, but refused to apologise, saying ho had not meant to refer to all the dockers.
