NATIONAL PARK HOSTEL.
COMMENCEMENT OF WORK. CATERING FOR CHRISTMAS. [DV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J WELLINGTON, Thursday. The chairman of tho Tongariro National Park Board, Mr. J. B. Thompson, announced to-day that matters in regard to the lease between the board and tho Tongariro Park Tourist Company had been finalised and the documents signed. The board was leasing several areas, comprising in all about 60 acres,, to the company, and the lease would take effect on. December 1, on which date tho company would take over the control of all accommodation The company was required to erect a suitable hostel. This would be of imposing appearance. The company had decided to provide at once fop the forthcoming- Christmas season a lodge to accommodate' 40 per sons. This would bo arranged in two berth cubicles. A married couplo yon Id be in chargo in tho meantime and would provido meals in another building, which would also bo ready by Christmas. A contract had been placed with the Fletcher Construction Company for tho erectiou of tho* hostel, lodges and other buildings, and work would be started' upon the lodges this week The main building would be completed by next November and would be ready for occupation in December, 1929. The total cost of tho main hostel, hydro plant and lodges -would bo about £68,500, exclusive of furnishings. Mr. Thompson referred to tho board's debit of grdtitudc to tho PrimA Minister and Hon. A. D McLeod for their personal interest and assistance in arriving at the present satisfactory position.
