SUNDAY SCHOOL EFFORT.

START MADE WITH BUILDING. GIFTS OF LAND AND MATERIAL. The Rev. W. P. Rankin, minister in charge of the New Lynn Presbyterian Church, has set about the construction of a new Sunday school building, and if necessary is prepared to himself lay 'the 90,000 bricks to be used. Tho need of a more commodious building has long been felt in tho district, and donations of material toward it have paved the way for a commencement, hut, as Mr. Rankin explains, this is not a wealthy church district and he is prepared to do the job single-handed if no volunteers come forward to aid him. Tho New Zealand Brick and Tile Company, which previously gave five acres for a football ground, has now donated a section opposite the brick church, and it is proposed io build a brick schoolroom 60ft. by 34ft., with additional classrooms at the side. Messrs. Gardner Brothers and Parker have made a gift of 90,000 bricks, and Mr. J. Fletcher, of the Fletcher Construction Company, has promised to donate the necessary windows.

Mr. Rankin was working yesterday witli two assistants in laying the foundations, lie lias some knowledge of the building trade, gained as a young man when ho superintended some of the constructional works done by members of his family in Scotland. Material which it will be necessary to buy. will cost about £IOOO, and for that sum the congregation will ultimately possess a building worth about £4OOO.
