ONE TREE HILL AREA.

PROPOSAL FOR BOROUGH. BOARD DEFERS QUESTION. Consideration of a resolution providing for the elevation of the present One Tree llill district to the status of a borough was deferred for six months at a meeting of the l'oad Board last evening. The chairman, Mr. 11. B. Bobbie, presided. Notice, of motion had been given by Mr. I!. O. Clark, who said the financial gain to the board would be in the region of £950 a year. The chairman said be was not in favour of the resolution. Non-property-holders would then have a vote as well as thoy* who were property-owners. Those really interested would be swamped by the moving population. 1( was stated that probably 75 per cent, of those entitled to vole were owners of property. Mr. J. S. llardwieke moved as an amendment that consideration should be deferred for six months. The amendment was carried by ft majority of four to three. Those in favour of the amendment were Messrs. J. S. llardwieke, 'Matheson, Slyfield and the •chairman, and those against, Messrs. K. W. Aimer, C. L. Mcintosh and U. Ci. Clark. The building inspector reported that 12 permits, involving £6092, had been issued since October 11. The Society for tho Protection of Women and Children was granted permission to hold a street collection on November 30. Tho Public Works Department wrote stating that owners of heavy vehicles were endeavouring to induce the Government to discontinue tho heavy traffic regulations which authorised local bodies to charge heavy traffic foes. Tho department asked for information concerning damage to roads by heavy vehicles, and whether a heavier class of road construction had been adopted man would have been (he case had vehicles been limited to, say, three tons. It was decided to inform tho department that the roads were greatly affected by heavy traffic, and that it had been necessary for the board to make provision for it in tho construction of roads.
