SINISTER SOCIALISM.
Sir,—ln last Thursday's Herald in. your excellent analysis of the "omissions and modifications" in the original planks of the Labour Party's platform you men-, (ion that the constitution. of the party says: "In any dispute between the national executive and the Parliamentary party the matter shall be referred to an emergency conference, or to an annual conference, and the decision of such shall be binding"; i.e., (he socialisation of production, distribution and exchange can be instituted by a majority vole at either of the conferences, and so the sinister omissions and modifications can be nullified. The electors will be wise if they demand an explanation of the procedure to he adopted by the Socialists before entrusting them with unlimited power to destroy the results of the thrift, tho energy and the endeavour that have enabled the British to acquire the free and enlightened political institutions we now enjov. Righteousness is the very essence of tho ethics in our economic life and it must bo clearly obvious that a policy of Socialism will enable the most astute to secure "all the best occupations," dissatisfaction will be rampant and every man and woman will challenge the right of the most successful to enjoy the good things that are the property of all. After many years incisive study of psychology and the incidence inseparable from j, Socialistic policy I am convinced thai until "altruism" replaces the egoism that is so predominant in human nature the realisation of a peaceful, or permanentlysuccessful, policy of Socialism will be impossible. William R. Keay. Kumeu.
