TRANSPORT BOARD POLL.
Sir,—l am strongly in favour of a Transport Board, mainly on account of the way our councillors have handled the problem of transport generally, and because any losses in running the services will be shared* by the districts whose areas come under its operations. Rut before consent be given by the ratepayers, the council should by special resolution agree that their nominees shall bo elected by it on their giving a written undertaking to tho council that in the event of suffering a defeat at the election in May next, they, the nominees, shall at once resign from tho beard, thus giving the new council no option but tq elect fresh members. Members nominated by the present council, though defeated in May next, could and probably will be allowed to hold office until 1931, when ratepayers' first opportunity of voting six new members will be given. So there is the possibility of the past muddling being continued until 1931 This is a serious danger and should be avoided. In view of tho management and Tramways Committee having come in for so much adverse criticism, I think candidates should expound their views on the public platform prior to tho election, thus enabling ratepayers to ascertain their fitness for office. The decision to have tho poll on the 31st inst., instead of allowing 42 days in which tho ratepayers can be made fully cognisant with the v/hole position, together with the great speed with which the Act was put through Parliament makes one think that there is great anxiety on the part of the City Council that the public should not be given too much information. H. P. Taylor.
