" Wager."—At four years old Valkon contested 13 races and his record at the age named was as follows: —Two wins, five times second, once third, and live time" unplaced. R.W., Ellerslie.—At live years old Star Stranger contested 23 races, his record at the age named being five wins (including one dead-heat), three times second, once third, and 14 times unplaced. NOTES BY PHAETON. W EIG HT-FO R-AC E CONTEST. The next important weight-for-ago race set down for decision in Australia is the W. S. Cox Plate mine furlongs), which is to be run next Saturday at the Mooneo Valley meeting, nnd. with tho Auckland-owned colt Prince Humphrey engaged, there will be a New Zealand interest in the race. " The Prince' will have to compete against some strong talent should lie figure in the field of contestants, for included in the nominations are Gothic, Amounis, Winalot, Highland, Statesman, Fourth Hand, Vnals, Bacchus, Maple. Black Duchess, Balmerino, Hamulus, Mollison, and Oatendalc. Tho last-named quartette are candidates for Derby honours, and, in the event of tho three-year-olds engaged all fulfilling their engagement, a line should be forthcoming as to what is likely to be their relative positions when the classic event is decided at Fleminglon next Saturday week. CONSENT'S IMPOST. An impression prevailed in certain quarters that Consent was liable to bo rehandicapped for the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap a3 a result of his victory in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham. There is, however, a condition attached to the Stewards' Handicap which reads ns follows:—"The winner, after declaration of weights, of any race of the value of £3OO to the winner, or of any race or races of the value of £SOO to the winner, may be rehandicapped." The stake value of the Shorts Handicap to the winner was i! 260. so that Consent is free from a rehqndicap, and his impost for the six furlongs raco at Riccarton remains nt 7.1. A GOOD COLT. The victory registered by Maplo in the Cauliield Cup must be accounted to enhance the merit of tho form displayed by tho three-year-old Strephon, who defeated the mare in easy style in tho decision of the Herbert Power Stakes a fe\y days prior to tne contest for the Caulfield Cup. Strephon is engaged in tho V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup, and his prospects in both races are viewed with considerable favour. Mollison having been so badly worsted in the decision of the Caulfield Guineas., Strephon is now proclaimed "Victoria's chief hope for the V.R.C. Derby." MISCELL A N EOUS NOTES. The Polydamon gelding White Fang has failed so far this season in his engagements, but the opinion is expressed that he may be expected to add to his winning record before he is much older. The Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting opens to-day. The principal event of the programme is the Spring Handicap (11 miles), in which the following horses are engaged:—Merry Damon 8.6, Cohesion 8.3, Cool Card 7.13. Polonett 7.9. Superb King 7.5. Princess Nnta 7.0. The searching eflect of tho contest attached to the A.J.C. Derby, when Mollison was worried down by Prince Humphrey, would appear to have left its marl: oti the son of Seremond and doubts are now expressed as to his being further tested during the present spring. Radiate, who has won both of his engagements in hurdle events this season, scored across country last season, nnd that is the particular department in which he is expected to win most fame. Radiate is a seven-year-old gelding by Polydamon from Bleriot. and it will therefore be recognised that he traces to good winning families. Lucky Light, the three-year-old half-sister (by Paper Money—Simper) to Gold Light, has so far only managed to win a livefurlong Maiden Plate, but the fact of tier having been left iu the New Zealand Derby and New Zealand Oaks seems to point that tiopea are entertained that, she will play a part, in the settlement of the two classic events at tho forthcoming meeting nt Riccarton. The French-bred colt Palais Royal, who ran second to Fairway in the St. Leger al Doncaster last month, registered a good performance m a mile and n-half raco at Chantiliy (France) a. few days prior to the St.. Leger, nnd it was chiefly on the form he displayed in the raco run on French noil that he was transported across Ihe Channel with a view to contesting the cassic event at Doncaster. Though defeated. Palais Roynl is credited with running a good race and lie is summed up ns a stayer. It is strongly contended that the slow pace at which the early stage of the Har court Cup was run told against Star Stranger, who would have been better served by a strong pace all the way in tho ten-furlong weight-for-age raco. Rapier, Laughing Prince. Star Stranger and Commendation, who came borne in that order in the Hareourt Cup contest, aro nil en gaged in the G. G. Stead Gold Cup, to be run at Riccarton on November 10, and it will be interesting to nolo tho placing when that raco is decided. In the matter of numbers tho colts and geldings at® most strongly represented in tho Canterbury Welcome Stakes, leading the fillies by four. Honour (by Limond— Homage), who was bought by Mr. G. D. Greenwood when a yearling for 2300gns, is included among tho colls engaged in the Riccarton race, nnd he is stated to show early promise of developing tho galloping quality The victory registered by Speed Light in tho Wellewley Stakes, run nt Trentham last Saturday, will probably stand to her when matters come to be summed up at Iliccarton on November 3.
