HYMN BOOKS.
Sir, —Before "Parnell Layman"' condemned so roundly the Auckland clergy for their apathy in not having adopted tho "English Hymnal," he should have mado himself acquainted with tho fact that there is at least one church in Auckland—St. Paul's—where it has been in use at the 11 a.m. service for some considerable time past. We do not use it at evensong, though it is hoped gradually to replace "Hymns Ancient and Motiern" with what is undoubtedly a far more virile collection. But, for the reasons so admirably set forth at synod by His Grace the Archbishop, the change, however desirable, cannot be made hastily. After all, even the "English Hymnal" has some defects and "Ancient and Modern" some excellencies. It is, however, a healthy sign that so much attention is now being focussed here and at '"Home" upon the great need of improvement in so important a part of real public - worship. We do need to got r'd of much sloppy sentimentality and morbid subjectiveness. Cecil A. B. Watsox.
