KING GEORGE'S SYMPATHY.
SIGNS OF A RECOVERY.
GREAT BRIDGE OVER TYNE.

In the course of his speech at the opening of the new road bridge over the Tyne at Newcastle to-day, King George referred to the grave industrial depression in that district. He expressed his regrets that, owing to the dislocation of trade by the Great War. the coal, iron, steel and shipbuilding industries, which had given world-wide renown to the River Tyne, had been struggling with adversity. [lis Majesty said ho was happy to ob serve that the dauntless handling of tlieso difficulties was achieving results. Already the coal industry of the north and the shipbuilding ot the Tyne appeared to be emerging from tho depression. Tho erection of tho new bridge was a characteristic act of courage and demonstrated tho belief of tho people in the power of those industries to recover their lost trade and again play their former proud role in the world's markets
Great crowds of people had assemblod to welcomo Their Majosties, who had driven through tho main thoroughfares along avonues of cheering spectators. They were greeted at fclie new secondary schools, which they inspected, by 23,000 school children.
The now bridge was formally opened by raising a barrier. A Royal Standard was thereupon broken and a salute of guns was fired. Church bells peaJed as the King and Queon crossed tho bridge, and continued their drive through Gateshead and Durham, where formal welcomes wero extended to them STRICKEN COALFIELDS. The fund of the Lord Mayor of London for the relief of distress in the stricken coalfields now amounts to £92,000. Considerable sums aro being spent on tho transfer of juveniles from the distressed mining areas to employment in other districts. ''
