STREET EXPLOSION.

ELECTRIC CABLE FAULT.

SURPRISE FOR SPECTATORS. A serious underground electrical cable fault on a comer of the junction of Queen and Customs Streets about midnight last night provided a spectacle and a surprise for interested late pedestrians. Shortly before midnight electric lights in the vicinity commenced to flicker, and tho cause of the trouble manifested itself in three smoke vents a few feet apart, in the corner footpath. Shortly they belched billows of dense black smoke which obscured vision for some chains. An employee of the Auckland Power Board was just driving away from tho scene after working at a feeder-box on the. other side of the street, about 12.30 a.m., when tliose gathered about were startled by a loud explosion, accompanied by a dazzling flash. There was a general scurry to a safer distance. Flames liheu broke through the bitumen find a watch was kept until the trouble was completely rectified.
