THE KAIKOURA DISTRICT.
SERIOUS DAMAGE DONE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. The principal damage done by the bush fires north of Kaikoura was in the Black Miller area. To-day it was reported from Kaikoura that the fires were practically out. Reports of damage aro very conflicting. There have been small stock losses. Serious damage has been dono to tho bush country. Tho Ohau Basin, 16 miles north of Kaikoura, suffered extensively. Two camps were wiped out on the top of the Ohau Basin and seven or eight men lost their belongings. Two scenic reserves adjoining the Ohau Basin have been affected, if not destroyed, by fire, and many camping depots beyond tho Hapuku Bridge have been demolished. There is little wind in tho ranges and the latest advice suggests that the fire will soon burn itself out.
