CANCER TREATMENT.
EMPLOYMENT OF RADIUM. [FROM Ol'R OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] LONDON. Sept. 7. A now technique 111 the application of vadium in tho treatment of cancer, which is giving tho most encouraging results, was mentioned at a meeting of the Court of Governors of the London Hospital, when il was announced that the house commit'eo of that hospital had sanctioned the purchase of a furthat 210 milligrams of radium at a cost of £2854. The addition to the existing 121 milligrams is being made as a result of urgent representations by tho medical and surgical staff. Tho committee emphasised that they were not announcing a " euro for cancer. It could, however, bo stated that in soma cases radium could be used where the knife could do nothing, and often a less severe operation could bo performed than would otherwise be necessary. It was stated that American papers had published articles on ihe work of the hospital, with the result that many Americans had sent donations with letters of sympathy and encouragement. In one letter enclosing a cheque for 590 dollars tho writer said: " I only wish it could bo many times larger. England has had a rough deal—God bless her." Toward the cost of the new purchase, it was stated, £IOOO had been "given by a woman who wished to remain anonymous. Thp balance —£1854—would have to be defrayed from the hospital funds, failing tho receipt of special donations.
