SAND IN RAIN WATER.
MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION. PROBABLE ORIGIN IN DESERT. [HV TELEGUAPH—MESS ASSOCIATION.] NELSON. Wednesday. A sample of rain water collected in the neighbourhood of Rotokohu, near tho West Coast, during the westerly storm on Monday morning was submitted to the Cawthron Institute to-day. After a microscopic examination of the suspended material which was responsible for tho reddish brown colour of the water, it was found to consist of minuto particles of dust and sand, tho rounded form of which indicated a desert area rather than a volcano as the probable place of origin.
