THE POPULAR OUTBOARD.
J- .GROWTH IN EFFICIENCY. One of the most amazing developments concGrning iDotor-fjojuts in recent vczirs lia3 been the rema/rkable efficiency of the outboard-engined liull, judged from the point of view of speed. There is little doubt that during tho corning season a speed of over AO miles per hour will be attained in Auckland with an outboard fngino developing well below 30 h.p., •*vbilo the remarkable speeds that have already been achieved would have been regarded as well-nigh impossible two years ago. Not only is the fast outboard motor-boat gaining; enormously in popularity, and bnngiing a large number of recruits into the f>poit who might never havo been attracted by llio inboard unit, but also the outboard is already being developed for corwfncrcial purposes, while for cruiser propulsion is likely to make headway in the..nijar future. Complete outbowda with speeds of 15 m.p.h. to 20 ni.p.h., and a sealing Capacity of four or live persons can be purchased for lesr-t than ,C 8(). Those who liuvo not followed (ho outboard motorboat movement closely, are unaware that outboard engines have rapidly developed from the small unit, the maximum power of which was about 4 h.p., to standard niodols, weighing little more, but capable of developing 11 b.h.p. or 12 b.h.p., ch is. ecpiivaltjnt to tho output of the.
