SOCIAL NEWS.

Mrs. Bent, of Tauranga, is a guest fit Arundel. Mrs. Hayno, of Auckland, is visiting Christchurch. Mrs. R. Cronheim, of Takapuna, has returned from a visit to Hamilton.. Mrs. W. Stevens, of Hnnterville, is visiting Auckland and is staying at Arundel.' Miss M. Woods, of Melbourne, who is a visitor to Auckland, is staying at the Grand Hotel. Miss G. Spain, of Alexandria, is visiting the Dominion and is at present slaying at the Grand Hotel. Sir Walter and Lady Stringer have returned to Auckland from a. visit to the South, and are at Bracburn. Mrs. 15. Armstrong and Miss Annstrong, of Te Awamutu, are visitors to Auckland and are staying at Cargen. Among the visitors staying at the Hotel Stonehurst are Mrs. Mclndoe, Mrs. C. Stanley Smith and Miss M. Smith, all of Dunedin. Mrs. Handyside and Mrs. Eric Riddiford, of Wellington, arrived in Auckland by the Niagara, and are staying aj/ tho Grand Hotel. Mrs. W. Forrest Marshall, of Clifton Road, Takapuna, is a passenger by the Niagara for Melbourne, where she will be the guest of her mother, Mrs. Boag, of Brighton. Mr. and Mrs. K E. Gritnwade, who have been on a visit to Norfolk Island for tho past six weeks,* have returned to their home in Clifton Road, Takapuna. Tho Ponsonby Croquet Club opened its season for play on Saturday afternoon, when perfect weather prevailed. There was a large gathering of members and honorary members. The president, Miss Brown, made a speech of welcome, and after playing the first ball, declared the lawns open for the season. Miss Brown was assisted by Miss Burton, vice-presi-dent These two ladies provided the afternoon tea and the prizes. Progressive croquet svas y>layed during the noon and tho prizes were won by Mrs. Hilton, Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Gall, Mrs. Not on and Mrs. Vaile. A hearty vote o thanks was accorded to 'president and vice-president for their hospitality.
