(Received October 0, 12.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. S. Tho conference of maritime unions has 'drawn up a policy for tho conduct of tho watorside workers' strike, and tho proceedings have terminated. Tho delegates agreed that members if the Waterside Workers* Union should bo instructed to refuso to apply for licences nnder tlio Transport Workers Act. It was decided to tako no action to end the strike. Tlans were formulated by which tho other maritimo unions are to provido financial assistance for the striking waterside workers and their dependants. It is believed that tho waterside workers will immediately move to extend tho strike to the other transport organisations, as tho proposal to resume work has been defeated. A number of vessels arrived at Melbourne at the week-end. Although 1800 .volunteers are at work there is still a shortage of labour. At Brisbane tho waterside workei-s have decided to recommend the Council of .Trades Unions to negotiate a settlement of the dispute on the following terms: — Tho removal of free labour at every port. Tho suspension of tho new award. The restoration of all previous conditions. Tho repeal of tho Transport Workers Act. Tho reinstatement of all unionists. The wharf labourers at Fremantle met Jo-day. A motion to resume work was declared carried but was challenged by a largo section of tho meeting. Tho disputes committee is now seeking a way oat of tho impasse.
