A Itiimiltoii resident, John Ircton, failed to appear in tho Hamilton Magistrate's Court this morning when lie wan charged with affixing a cancelled postage stamp to a letter, which ho posted at Hamilton on August 6. A statement was read in which defendant, said ho bought a number of stamps from a stranger. The stampvending machine at the post office was empty at the time. One of the stamps was torn and he fixed this to a letter. He did not notice that it bore the post offico cancellation marks. "The maximum penally for I lie offence is fixed at £IOO or three months' imprisonment," said the magistrate, Mr. Wyvern Wilson. The Legislature regarded the offence as a serious one. Defendant was fined £2. •
