PHILISTINES' CLUB.
Two one-act plays, by the Philistino Players, orchestral items and dancing passed a particularly enjoyable evening on Saturday at the Philistines' Club fortnightly gathering. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Saunders were host and hostess for the evening. The first play which was presented—"James and John" —showed the marked contrast between the attitudes of two brothers toward their father, who had just served a long term of imprisonment for embezzlement. Tho play was excellently acted by Miss Vera Zimao, as the ex-prisoner's wife; Mr. R. Singer and Mr. Hartman, his two sons; and Mr. Armitage, the e;c-prisoner himself. A lighter vein was struck in tho next P ls y< "Rococo," where tho story centred round a valuable vase? which appeared to have several claimants, among their, being » vicar, his brother and several other iclatives. An exciting climax was reached when, in a hand-to-hand struggle between the vicar and his nephew, the vase was knocked down and broken. Jho P al ~ were taken by Mrs. U Kmg, Miss 1 aimer, Miss A. Webster, Mr. *. McCallum, Mr Ncwlincr and Mr. King. Orchestral items were given by Mrs. G. Primo, Mrs. Bartlett, Miss Lloyd and Miss Walker, and after supper dancing took place.
