THE DAY AT ELLERSLIE.

FROCKS, FANCIES AND MODES One of the most beautiful days that spring can give was Saturday, and the people who went out, to Ellerslic to attend the spring meeting of the Auckland Pacing Club considered themselves very fortunate in the weather. At the present moment the grounds arc looking beautiful in their spring dross, and nowhere can there be seen lawns more velvety in their smoothness, more exqusitely green than lliore. Vying with them in freshness and wonderfully beautiful in their budding greenness arc the trees—the willows, the oaks and all the other deciduous trees against which the contrasting brightness of the flowerbeds below, flauntingly gay with ncmesia, anemones, ranunculi, stock and pansies of every possible shade, stands out with wonderfully satisfying effect. Perhaps one of the greatest charms of Ellerslic are the vistas that one gets, the green lawns stretching away into the distonce until they lose themselves in a dappled mass of trees sharply outlined against the more distant hills. It is a place full oT charm to the garden-lover—-when all goes well! Indications of what is to be worn in the summer months were to be seen in the flocking, which showed more than we have yet seen of what might be termed the essentially feminine note, soft and l'rilly in the georgette and crepe de chine frocks which were worn under ensemble coats and sometimes by themselves when they were of crepe de chine. Jumper suits in jersey cloth, crcpe do chine, velour and metal-embroidered tricolettc3 were favourite wear, and these were in all colours or sometimes in a blending of two or three colours. Hats were large or small, whichever the wearer fancied, sometimes turning off tho face, or in others drooping well over it. Blue was certainly a colour of which there was much to be seen, from the light blue of forget-me-not to the deep blue of sapphire. Among those who were present were:Lady dean Mcintosh, who wore a light green fur-trimmed coat over a crepe de chine frock and small grey hat trimmed with green ribbon; Lady Sinclair Lockhart: a black ensemble with a highcrowned black hat trimmed with Naples blue velvet; Lady Nolan, black satin ensemble and black hat with lace; Lady Myers, black satin suit with fur wrap and small black hat with black osprcys at one side; Lady Fuller (Sydney), fawn satin with gold embroideries and felt hat to tone; Mrs. B.
