A new stage in the long progress toward Christian reunion was reached today at Cheltenham, when Archbishop Germanos, of the Greek Orthodox Church, stood with two oi the foremost members of the German and Danish Lutheran Churches and representatives of five of the British Free Churches on (ho platform of the Church Congress. The depth of the understanding vealed by their addresses drew from Dr. A. C. Headiam, Bishop of Gloucester, tho remark that what ho had seen and heard encouraged the hope that something bright be accomplished in the future in the direction of reunion. "We do not want, ho said, "to make a pact with this or that Church. We are not as vet ready, but if we consider the subjects uppermost today we must realise the immense gain it will be when we are allowed to hear men of other creeds in our pulpits, and when \ve can preach to them." CHUKOT OF ENGLAND. EVANGELICALS' VIEWS. BISHOPS' ACTION CRITICISED. Australian Tress Association—United Service LONDON, Oct. 5. Tho Ilomo Secretary, Sir William Joynson-Hicks, who is Parliamentary leader of the evangelical section of the Church of England, has issued a statement in which he declares that the Church's trouble has arisen because certain of the clergy have practised services contrary to the doctrine of the Church. Sir William says the bishops permitted theso practices to grow to such an extent that they camo to the conclusion they could not deal with the irregularities, except by making legal those that were illegal, though Parliament on two occasions had declined to sanction tho alterations. It was a very grave decision. The bishops themselves were setting an example in lawlessness. Sir William appeals to (ho bishops to delav action, saying: "We cannot give up the principles of the Reformation."
